Lavan – Girani city located to the extreme north of Giran along the Thumb River against the Aril Mountains; original capital city of Giran; almost entirely constructed and carved from black granite, hence its nickname ‘The Black City’; its area of influence extends down the southern bank of the Thumb River and an un-defined, un-bordered southern expanse encompassing numerous small towns, hamlets, and villages; current ruler – Richard Lavan, self-titled Steward and Usurped King, though his wife, Bethany, is the figurehead due to a royal decree by the Rose Crown (Martha, Richard’s mother, was the figurehead until her death in the 15th YOM.); capital of the True King Coalition, which opposes House Rose’s claim to the throne; home to the Sisters’ Sanctuary; pop. ~1 million; est. ~450 BB

Onesill Medraza – an assassins’ school in Qannoc; to survive the training is the only way to complete the training.

Qannoc (KAN-nek) – the human city located near the Elven Enclave of the same name, founded at a large oasis as a way station when crossing the lower expanse of the Sun’s Anvil; noted for its variety and quality of weapons rivaling dwarf-made; home to the Onesill Medraza; pop. ~200,000; est. 1049 BB.

Scosa (SKOH-suh) – realm and capital city above the Fire Mountains; ruled by Emperor Jolph Rhince; pop unknown; est. unknown.

Seppa – realm and capital city located eastern Brehm on the Twilight Bay; bordered by the Fire Mountains (north), Sea of Tears (east), Thumb River and Forest of Dawn (south), the Wasteland (west); capital city is planned, as it sits within the remains of an inactive volcano; divine monarchy (always male, who owns everything); current ruler – Jeden Gehis (zhe-DEN gay-HEES); pop. ~8 million; est. ~1600 BB.

Tower of Sorcery – sorcerers’ school located in Scosa.

Wurm (WERM) – realm and capital city; populated by two distinct ethnicities – nomadic Himari (HEE-mah-ree) and agricultural Fili (FEE-lee); straddles the border of the Sun’s Anvil and Moon’s Quench; The Rais (rah-ISS) is the ruler for a five-year term. The Qaadim (kah-Deem) assists the Rais and will be the next Rais. Alternates between the two groups; current Rais – Malun Ne’Sat (mahl-OON neh-SAHT); current Qaadim – Harel Graff (HAIR-el GRAF); home to ‘Wurm Warm Red’, considered the finest wine on Brehm; pop. ~1.2 million; est. unknown.

Miscellanea

BB (Before the Blight) – Originally, the years were counted from the time of the first creation of elves, the first race, as ‘Since Birth’ (SB 1 to SB 1951). After the death of the Mother Trees, those years were renamed ‘Before the Blight’ and counted in reverse (SB 1951 becoming BB 1, SB 1 becoming BB 1951). Since the Elvish calendar was the first on Brehm and totally accurate relative to days and nights of the year, it is used throughout Brehm.  See ‘YOM’.

Bog’s Beer – considered the best beer on Brehm; brewed in Bria by the Mho family for generations.

Chork – a Scosani dining implement combining the sleek lines of a chopstick with the facility of a fork.

Dragons – Currently, there are no known dragons alive on Brehm. The last, Pyrfurion, was slain by Jolph Rhince on Midsummer’s Day, the first day of the ensuing Years of Misery (YOM).

N’ – honorific attached to an individual’s last name after surviving the training at the Tower of Sorcery; survivors are awarded a magical, red teardrop-shaped tattoo extending from the right corner of the mouth onto the chin; observers relate that the blood drop only appears when the individual dies.

 ‘t – an honorific attached to an individual’s last name, who survives training at the Onesill Medraza in Qannoc.

Teared or Teardropped – refers to the colored teardrop tattoos on a mage’s cheek from the Tower of Learning to signify mastery of a specific skill or discipline; often coupled with the number of tattoos (i.e. 1-teared, 7-teared); left cheek tattoos denote elemental magic while right cheek tattoos indicate discipliine; magic (skill): red – fire, blue – water, white – wind, green – earth; science (discipline): red – warfare, blue – medicine, white – governance, green – nature.

Wurm Warm Red – a blend, considered the finest wine on Brehm; grapes grown on the Moon’s Quench by a consortium of four families.

YOM (Year of Misery) – number of days, weeks, months, years after the death of the Mother Trees; always expressed in its ordinal form – 1st, 2nd, and so on. E.g.: Chork’s first day of his 14th year is the day after his 13th birthday, Midsummer’s Day, in the 14th YOM.
